Pregnancy Diary – Week 12

This is week 12 of my pregnancy and according to some sources, it is also the last week of the first trimester!

There is so much confusing information about the pregnancy trimesters. Some websites say that the first trimester lasts from week 1 (the week of your last period) through week 12, others say that it last through weeks 13 or even week 14.

So, I decided not to confuse my pregnant brain anymore and to trust Wikipedia on this matter. And it says: “The first trimester is from week one through 12. The second trimester is from week 13 through 28. The third trimester is from 29 weeks through 40 weeks.” Thus, I am absolutely positive that this week is officially the last week of the first trimester. Phew!

Big part of this week was waiting for NIPT test results. Even though I was doing my best to stay and think positive, I still worried. Not in a way that I would start freaking out, but I did feel a little anxious. What was comforting to me and helped me remain hopeful was our first two ultrasounds which showed that the baby was developing normally, and the fact that I was feeling good and did not have any pain or spotting.

While I was doing my best to nurture positive thinking and control my worries, I kept checking my eHealth profile online every day. But it kept showing “results are pending…”. And when I finally saw that the results were released, I started checking my phone non-stop waiting for a call from our midwife. I needed the reassurance that everything was ok ASAP! She called me the following morning and said that my pregnancy was at low risk for common chromosome disorders. I was so relieved that I even shed a couple of tears. Our baby is doing well!

Honestly, I do not know what I would do if the results were different. This is something we did not discuss with my husband. While we were waiting for the results, we agreed not to clutter our minds with “what-if” scenarios. There was really nothing we could do at that point but wait and stay positive. And now we are very grateful for the good results.

The second trimester is often called the “golden trimester” as women start to feel more energy. I already started feeling better by the end of this week – I was able to stay up until 11pm on Friday! And I did not feel exhausted. I am so excited about the second trimester and leaving my fatigue in the past. At least for a few months!
